In a first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” New York City, promising “a new era” and an audacious commencement to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The new democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.

Ignoring advice to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”

Steering by Socialist Convictions

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my principles for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these services may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering city upkeep: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
