The United States central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of positions created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
