Around fifty vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Automobiles, exterior walls and mailboxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Officers state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a individual discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they reported.
Officers then found multiple other marked automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Police state early analysis suggest the substance was most likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; officials are currently not informed of any harm in association with the occurrence," they added.
Local authorities announced they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for information.
A high-ranking official stated the vandalism made him stunned and had to be solved quickly.
"This incident hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on a platform, referring to the killing of nine victims by a gunman aiming at residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
