Hutchinson Caracal Race TLR 40 Rolling Resistance Review (2024)

Hutchinson Caracal Race TLR 40 Rolling Resistance Review (1)

The Caracal Race is a new gravel bike tire from Hutchinson, and they claim it's the fastest gravel tire on the market. Hutchinson borrowed the SwiftEasy casing and Mach Tread 3.0 compound from their latest road bike tires, and together with the semi-slick tread pattern, the Caracal Race at least has all the right ingredients to back up their claims.

The Caracal Race is also part of Hutchsinon's "Racing Lab" range of tires, representing the tires offering their newest tire technology. Be aware that the Caracal Race should not be confused with the regular Caracal, as even though that tire comes with the same tread pattern, it's technically a completely different tire that uses a more conventional casing design and compound.

The semi-slick tread pattern looks fast and reminds us of some other semi-slick tires that come with a true slick center tread. The slick center tread on the Caracal is even a bit wider than what we're used to seeing, and it should behave like a slick tire when going in a straight line. The edge knobs are pretty low, but they look like they will grip well both on- and off-road.

Hutchinson has kept it simple as the Caracal Race is only available in the 40 mm size with brown sidewalls. We've tested it and can already tell you the Caracal Race is extremely fast..

The CX/Gravel section is a multi tire size section, air pressures have been adjusted to the measured casing width.

All numbers are for a single tire at a speed of 29 km/h / 18 mph and a load of 42.5 kg / 94 lbs.

Use the formula: RR (Watts) = CRR * speed (m/s) * load (N) to calculate rolling resistance at a given speed and load.

When we qualify gravel bike tires as tires that have an edge knob height of at least 1.0 mm, we can confirm Hutchinson's claims: the Caracal Race is the fastest gravel bike tire on the market. The Caracal Race rolls even faster than the slick 38 mm Schwalbe Pro One road bike tire, which is one of the fastest and most popular road bike tires.

Surprisingly, the low rolling resistance doesn't come at the cost of wet grip as the center grip in our hard surface wet grip test comes in near the top. The edge grip is a bit lower, but we see that more often on semi-slick tires where the knobs offer less grip on a hard surface than a slick tread.

Even the puncture resistance of the tread is decent, but the sidewalls aren't the strongest that you can find.

Hutchinson has delivered the fastest semi-slick gravel bike tire to date, and we're impressed by the overall performance of the Caracal Race.

FAQs

How much difference does tyre rolling resistance make? ›

Rolling resistance is the energy lost by the tires deforming as the wheels turn. Despite rolling resistance only accounting for about 10% of the total resistance experienced by a typical ultra-distance cyclist over an entire race, different tire choices can make a significant impact on average cycling speed.

How much does rolling resistance affect speed? ›

“It will vary depending on the tyre, pressure, tarmac and so on, but at typical road bike speeds aerodynamic drag might account for 70% of the effect holding you back, with about 20% down to rolling resistance. All other factors – like your chain rubbing, the bearings – might be only 10%.

How to reduce rolling resistance? ›

Therefore, decreasing the tire footprint -- the overall surface area where the tire contacts the road -- is a straightforward method to reduce rolling resistance. For example, a 6" wide (155 mm) tire will produce 40% less rolling resistance than a 10" wide (255 mm) tire.

What is the coefficient of rolling resistance in cycling? ›

Coefficient of Rolling Resistance

It is simply the friction between your tires and the road. The greater the friction, the slower you will go. Poor road conditions, lower quality tires and tubes, rider weight, and speed all contribute to adding friction and thus slow you down.

Is higher or lower rolling resistance better? ›

The 20 watts consumed by rolling resistance are lost as the kinetic energy is transformed to heat and sound. By lowering your rolling resistance, you will increase your speed since fewer watts are lost. As you can see, 9.24W would be consumed by rolling resistance in this example.

How much does rolling resistance affect MPG? ›

Rolling resistance refers to the energy it takes to rotate the tires, affected by the friction caused when the tire surface meets the road. The Department of Energy estimates that 4 to 11 percent of fuel consumption is due to tire rolling resistance.

Is it bad to have a high rolling resistance? ›

The higher the rolling resistance is, the more energy to overcome it is needed. Hence a considerable impact of tyre rolling resistance on fuel consumption (and on how long your tyres will last). A 30% increase in rolling resistance generates between 3 and 5% of fuel overconsumption.

Does higher tire pressure reduce rolling resistance? ›

The amount of rolling resistance impacts your speed. In a lab, as you increase tire pressure, your rolling resistance decreases.

Do low rolling resistance tires wear faster? ›

Low-rolling resistance tires are engineered to balance efficiency and durability. While they may wear slightly faster than some traditional tires, their lifespan is generally competitive. Proper maintenance, regular tire rotations, and alignment checks can help maximize their longevity.

Do wider tires reduce rolling resistance? ›

The greater surface area of contact will increase grip. Yes, it will also reduce rolling friction, but it will increase sliding friction.

How to tell if a tire is low rolling resistance? ›

Tires with low rolling resistance (LRR) often feature thinner sidewalls, shallower tread blocks and specialized rubber compounds.

What causes high rolling resistance? ›

The main contributor to rolling resistance is the process known as hysteresis. Hysteresis is essentially the energy loss that occurs as a tire rolls through its footprint. The energy loss must be overcome by the vehicle's engine, which results in wasted fuel.

What is the normal force of rolling resistance? ›

Constant Resistance Coefficient Parameterization

When you set Resistance model to Constant coefficient , the rolling resistance is directly proportional to the resistance coefficient F = Nμ, where: F is the rolling resistance force. N is the normal force. μ is the rolling resistance coefficient.

What is a good resistance for cycling? ›

Even at our lowest, we still want to have some resistance on our bikes. A flat road should be around a 5 on your effort scale of 1-10. A jog is typically out of the saddle, with your hands in second or on the main handlebar of your bike.

How important is rolling resistance in a tire? ›

Rolling resistance translates into 3 benefits: reduced fuel consumption, fewer CO₂ emissions, and greater range. At the same time, MICHELIN e·PRIMACY delivers great wet braking performance and for a long period of time. Even after 30,000 km, it passes the standards expected of a new tyre.

How much of a difference does rotating tires make? ›

Longer-lasting tires and suspension: Uneven tread wear on your tires not only causes them to wear out faster, but it may also lead to vibration that can damage your suspension system. Rotating your tires regularly is an effective way to extend the lifespans of your tires and suspension.

Are low rolling resistance tires worth it? ›

Low rolling resistance tires can be much more fuel-efficient tire than conventional tires. The U.S. Department of Energy has done research that shows that utilizing low rolling resistance tires can have as much as a 10% fuel savings impact for drivers. However, for most drivers, the fuel savings is around 3%.

How much of a difference does air resistance make? ›

When air resistance acts, acceleration during a fall will be less than g because air resistance affects the motion of the falling objects by slowing it down. Air resistance depends on two important factors - the speed of the object and its surface area. Increasing the surface area of an object decreases its speed.
